Our Just-So Stories
Manor & Mews began in 2015 with the dovetailing of two serious interests. On one hand, you have the owners of Obeetee Rug Company seeking to expand into the world of fine furniture making. On the other hand, you have David Salmon — eager to create a fresh look that counterbalances his traditional work. Connecting strongly over the summer in London, the two parties have literally broken new ground. Now, working jointly with their talented teams of designers and cabinetmakers, they craft the history of Manor & Mews with their customers every day.
How Manor & Mews Got Its Name
To deconstruct our name for a moment, a manor is the main residence of an estate. Mews originally referred to royal stables (in modern day converted to posh living spaces). Mews also indicates a small street of apartments and shops hidden behind a larger avenue.
Together, both pay homage to our British heritage, promising elegance without pretension. And there is a bit of a play built-in: the sound-alikes ‘manner’ and ‘muse’ stand for style, fashion, conduct, inspiration, and creativity.
Our Principled Principals
Designer and Maker of Fine Furniture
“There are three rules to furniture: proportion, proportion, and proportion.”
The main man behind Manor & Mews enjoys a global reputation for furniture design and cabinetmaking around the world and with the rich and famous. Trained in the fine art of antique restoration, David Salmon has worked with English Heritage and the National Trust, and has created museum-quality furniture for the Royal Palace at The Hague, the Supreme Court of the United States, Arab heads of state, embassies in the UK, and royal households around the world. Since the opening of his first showroom on the Kings Road, London, in 1989, David has been London’s leading bespoke furniture maker with his brand of ‘David Salmon Furniture’. Expanding to New York, he has worked with the best interior designers worldwide.
Since 2002 David has been a main board director of the British Furniture Manufacturers Association, which represents the industry to the marketplace, government and suppliers. In 2003 he received the honour of the Freedom of the City of London and was made a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers.
David’s vast knowledge of the highest quality furniture design and manufacturing has made him a go-to resource for the best interior designers, architects, and five-star hotel operators internationally.

Oliver thrives in finding inspiration and merging ideas from seemingly unconnected sources. At Manor and Mews, Oliver specialises in sample development, including fabric and hardware production that utilises hand-made techniques and artisanry. He has a wide range of practical knowledge and is as comfortable in a screen-printing workshop as he is working with metal, carpentry and upholstery.
